NASA’s Artemis III will need three rockets to do the job Apollo did with one
NASA has offered a candid look at Artemis III and the long road ahead for its partners. Artemis III is shaping up like Apollo 9 in Earth orbit, but with a much bigger coordination challenge: three separate launch systems—SLS, Blue Origin’s lander, and SpaceX’s Starship—must rendezvous, dock, and transfer crew. Blue Origin’s lander, based on the Mark 2, will ride with Orion and test life support, avionics, and a crew cabin, while SpaceX’s Starship docking system will form the simpler second link once Starship reaches orbit and proves relight capability. Orion will mate with both vehicles in sequence, with a lunar-surface space-suit simulator on board for testing. NASA is watching Starship Flight Test 13 and the evolving lander infrastructure, as the agency notes the mission’s launch choreography is among the most complex NASA has attempted. It’s ambitious, and success hinges on flawless multi-vehicle coordination across pads, software, and ground ops.
