BC Humanist posted a video and an article about exemptions for religious properties in Edmonton; however, this situation is spread across Canada.
Many Edmontonians are unaware that their property taxes subsidize 656 religious properties, costing the city $20.3 million last year. This significant sum is due to exemptions mandated by the Municipal Government Act, placing the burden on homeowners and small businesses to cover municipal costs. Eliminating these exemptions could lower property taxes by about one percent or create a $100-million investment fund in five years. With Edmonton’s pressing housing and climate challenges, it’s worth questioning whether religious properties are being put to their best use. Some, like Westmount Presbyterian Church, have transformed their land into affordable housing. Other cities, such as Montreal and Iqaluit, have successfully re-evaluated their religious tax exemptions. Edmonton should consider whether it makes sense to continue these subsidies, especially when some religious groups do not serve the broader community or promote inclusivity.
