From smart glasses to AI pins, privacy fears challenge tech’s next big bet
By Aditya Soni and Kenneth Li
AI-powered glasses, pins and wearable recorders could become the next big computing platform, but there’s a problem: they can see and hear the world around us. That has raised concerns about people being recorded without their knowledge or consent, particularly as companies collect more environmental data to make their devices useful.
Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have become a focus of the debate, with privacy lawsuits and restrictions at some UK venues. Other companies are responding with camera-free glasses or devices that require users to deliberately activate recording. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also argued that truly personal AI devices will need to process more information locally rather than sending everything to the cloud. The technology may be convenient, but the privacy questions are becoming harder to ignore. Before AI wearables become part of everyday life, companies will need to convince people that they can use them without turning everyone around them into unwitting participants.
