Why Is ADHD On The Rise

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasingly diagnosed in both children and adults. This rise raises questions: Is it due to more awareness and expanded diagnostic criteria, or are there real changes in behaviour? While ADHD was first recognized over a century ago, recent surveys suggest that 1 in 9 children in the U.S. now have an ADHD diagnosis. Adults, too, are being diagnosed at similar rates, reinforcing the understanding that ADHD is a lifelong condition. Although no definitive lab test for ADHD exists, brain imaging shows differences in those affected. Experts also suggest modern societal factors, like social media, may be influencing how symptoms manifest.
