Scientists find planet made on new matter recipe, and it formed after a Red Giant ate a solar system
A new study on the white dwarf HS 0209+0832 suggests we may be seeing a second-generation planet forming after its star’s red giant phase. By reanalyzing Hubble data from 1999, researchers detected unusual elements in the star’s atmosphere, including niobium, hinting at a gas giant rich in heavy elements orbiting the white dwarf. The finding points to a planet that formed from material shed by the dying star, a rare secondary planet scenario, and implies planets can emerge close to a white dwarf even after disruptive stellar events. The team estimates the niobium-rich world is about Jupiter-sized, potentially with a comet-like tail that forms a disk and feeds material back onto the star. If this second-generation planet endures, it could remain in a stable habitable zone for millions of years as the white dwarf cools.
