From saints to social media, the idea of incorruptibility is making waves again. A recent TikTok video features Yale historian Carlos Eire discussing St. Teresa of Avila, whose body was exhumed and found to be mummified—not miraculously preserved as many believe. This misconception often stems from how the church defines incorruptibility versus the interpretations of believers. Natural factors like temperature and humidity play a significant role in the preservation of these bodies, and sometimes, they are treated with preservatives. The truth is, these cases can be explained without invoking miracles. If true supernatural preservation existed, it would be widely known, not relegated to church displays.
