Norway wastes vast amounts of energy, particularly surplus heat from industrial processes. Researchers at NTNU have developed technology to harness this surplus heat, which currently goes to waste, equivalent to half of the electricity consumption of all Norwegian households. This technology can also purify industrial wastewater, turning it into drinkable water, which is crucial for regions facing water scarcity. The process involves evaporating impure water through a membrane, producing clean water and utilizing temperature differences to generate mechanical energy. Despite its potential, the technology faces practical challenges in industrial applications.
