How to assemble science

Why does science seem to change its mind so often? One week, a study says coffee is good for you; the next, it’s bad. The problem often isn’t that science keeps getting things wrong, but that individual studies are reported without considering the bigger picture. With millions of research papers published every year, figuring out what the evidence actually tells us is a challenge.
This article explores how systematic reviews and meta-analyses help researchers combine findings from many studies to identify what holds up. These methods have improved medical decisions, helped prevent avoidable deaths, informed education and conservation, and strengthened our understanding of climate change. But important gaps remain, including how to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and lived experience. AI may eventually speed up the process, though it still carries risks of errors and misleading conclusions. The takeaway? Before accepting a headline based on one new study, look at the wider body of evidence. The most useful scientific insight often comes not from a single discovery, but from assembling what we already know.
