Science isn’t a fixed object; it’s something people do. Researchers decide what questions to ask, how to frame terms, what counts as evidence, and who gets funded. Yet science sits in a real world that constrains its findings, nudging us toward closer approximations of reality. The key idea is scientific perspectivism: different viewpoints—architect, engineer, biologist, economist—can all be valid, each highlighting different facets of the same world. Scientific pluralism pushes back against reductionism, showing that diverse disciplines illuminate nature in complementary ways. The result is a robust, collaborative enterprise that must balance openness to perspective with humility about its limits. By recognizing the social elements of science without denying reality, we can avoid scientism and postmodern extremes, using philosophy and communication to improve how science serves society.
