In recent decades, our picture of human evolution has grown messy as we find more species. The paleontologist Ian Towle argues in Clades, Grades, and the Genus Problem that our naming system is broken. Cladistics groups by actual branching, but we often don’t know the exact splits; Linnaean taxonomy relies on visible traits, which blur as more hominins are found. Today, hominin taxonomy isn’t strictly cladistic and often isn’t neatly divided into genera. Towle proposes a radical fix: lump all late hominins (4–5 million years) into one genus, Homo, with species like Australopithecus afarensis becoming Homo afarensis. This makes classification stable but sacrifices details about ecology and adaptation. The debate highlights how taxonomy must balance clarity with the messy reality of evolution, and Towle’s idea could be a placeholder until we know more.
