Hydrogen Tech

Hydrogen tech sounds sexy in headlines, but the story here is about limits. Hydrogen combustion isn’t a clear upgrade over fuel cells for most uses, and it brings real drawbacks: storage challenges, leaks, and pollution from nitrogen oxides. Green hydrogen is still rare, and even if we scale it up, the energy math is tough—electricity-to-hydrogen-to-electricity is often only 30-40% efficient. Batteries kept winning the race, and today, battery EVs are cheaper and more efficient, with rapid gains in energy density. Hydrogen may have a niche role for heavy equipment or heat-intensive industries, but a broad hydrogen-powered transport future remains unlikely. If we’re investing in infrastructure, better fast charging and battery supply chains offer clearer, faster payoffs than pushing hydrogen on light transport.
