Peter Gutmann, a computer scientist, has some strong opinions about the US National Institute for Standards and Technology’s (NIST) push for post-quantum cryptographic algorithms. Since 2016, NIST has been advocating for these new algorithms to secure data against the future threat of quantum computing. Gutmann argues that the whole initiative is misguided, calling it ‘bollocks.’ He believes the focus should be on improving existing systems rather than chasing after a theoretical problem. This perspective raises important questions about the direction of cryptographic research and its practical implications for security.
